Uris clocks go differently: Book review

Heinrich Danioth: Call to prayer

The Uri clocks run differently
model of a traditional world?

hierarchy
Anselm Zurfluh / Albrt Hauser; http://www.thesisverlag.ch/presse-uri.htm
12.5.10

"It's not illegal to let your mind wander in the mountains and the idea to give the pre-and epitome of this small circle is to be found in the valley community. Such unusually to secure the small Menschenhäufleins thoughtful feeling must have been there, nurtured for centuries, where the individual is powerless against an overbearing, cold, cruel nature. "
Karl Schmid these sentences wrote in a study of the small circle. Anselm Zurfluh, who lives in Silenen, in France teaching historians, has looked into because of the source material and a rich literature of this question How has the small circle -. meant here is Uri - under circumstances and conditions that changed since the 17th century, say can there been dominant who lives and livelihoods of mountain people limited and determine today?

The might of nature

a geographical reality: The nature, the climate set, the mountains, it is stated in the first chapter, physical limits. Steep slopes - to the Wild haymaking was needed at that time some crampons - more difficult and complicated the agricultural work. Long and snowy winter avalanches threatened with their people and affecting adversely the ground. And after the snow melts there were repeated large and devastating floods. Think of the disaster a few years ago. Although there is the hair dryer that heats including the low level of Altdorf, but on the whole, the habitat is scarce and the hostile nature. The Uri is a
Space over which he does not control. To accomplish this "on physical reality" to express, he said, and still speaks of "it". The "it" is by definition something that is neither comprehensible nor understandable. Even Sigmund Freud was the "it" spoken, and the Uri doctor and folklorist Edward Renner described the phenomenon especially with reference to the Uri Share examples. To fulfill its superior power to foreclose and to defend the man pulls a guard ring, from which the power of the "it" is banished. This creates something of a sacred space in which a man thanks to certain rites - think of the Call to prayer - the "it" commands stop. A final protection is certainly there, as well as the legends Teaching, no. What has
Herbert Lüthy in his book, "France's clocks are different" words, one could partially transferred to the Uri. The Uri clocks are different. The Reformation had no chance here, and the French Revolution brought about little change of attitude. But the Uri knew to compete well. In the age of the coaches and the Säumerverkehrs they benefited from the Gotthard Pass. They were so connected with this mountain that a difficult adjustment to new conditions were. The first train in 1882, the canton Uri greeted with black flags.

children wealth

Some demographic components: Because a birth prevention by and large lacked, it was not possible to adjust the population density manufacturing capabilities. The impoverished people, especially in the 19th Century, and had no choice but to accept the canton of imported foreign entrepreneurs industrialization. But clashes between the old and the new world were almost programmed. Outsiders express effort to understand this mentality. One example: Klaus passport sold a little girl rhododendrons. A motorist gets out to buy them, but he's no small change. The mother, who surrounds on the doorstep of the house, from a large group of children appear, is not able to touch to the small change, because money has not. The car driver to his wife: This is the result of so many children.
In fact, in Uri was left to the propagation of the natural coincidence. Number of children and birth have been and are higher than in other regions. However, now approaches the number of children to the numbers in other cantons and countries. But the birth rate is still higher than elsewhere. Have children, that was and is something beautiful and wonderful, and it belonged to the divine responsibility. On the other hand, had no children to be a disaster. prove the pilgrimages of married couples without children, it clearly. But the Uri practiced birth control is not therefore not for lack of funds, but because they had no motivation to. They knew that children could help, but they knew also that a too large group of children was contrary to the prosperity. This has led to the emigration and as promptly pay for services.
seems almost exotic, from today's perspective, the "heavens". It is an enlightened travel writer of the 18th Century survived. When children were sick, you do not always sought the help of a few doctors and healers, but have masses read, "so that they may die soon." And they shed, the Enlightenment, no tears: "On the contrary, you can be happy, and it is: You're now an angel in heaven." Victim of a deception. It is first all wrong, that to be interpreted as callousness. The idea, Zurfluh that a dead child could be a boon is, moreover, nothing of pastors and even less to set a unreflective functionalism: "It is very easy for the people of a spiritual help which the Church supports and affirms was.

dependence

The fact that the marriage in Uri circles were small is not surprising. Similar findings have been in other cantons - made - such as Wallis. Although there had been no lack of contacts with strangers (Gotthardpass!), the men brought their wives almost always in their own village. Thus 70 percent the family of Hänsler Bürglen and Unterschächen 1920-1939 their wives in a circle of less than two miles looking for. Often solved the issue of child suitability of a woman very easily. Did the Kiltgang to a premarital conception, one could see that in no way as bad luck. The ratio was just legalized by marriage. The ancestral division of labor - the man working in the field and in the workshop, and he works in politics, but the woman takes care of the children - this division of labor was seen as natural and God-given.
The study of economic conditions (agriculture, mercenary service, transportation service, Crafts, policy results) for Zurfluh the conclusion that the Uri to the beginning of the 20th Century in part on the earnings of other survived. That they were doomed. To accept the industry and factory work was also complicated by the belief. It was and is very happy prosperous, so rich. At the same time there is distrust of speculative or fast earning. (As Zurfluh wrote his book, it gave the Kings Club yet. It is remarkable that so many Uri involved.)
What about "equality" of democracy, political rights? Reply from Zurfluh: "In Uri everyone has their rightful place." There is an above and below. The hierarchy is not sentenced or rejected. Important as this question seems to be different: what church and what religion you belong to? As before, the powerful Catholic Church and the theology of the Uri no formal structures of thought. Urner review of the world is magical, and it shall and may be with "it" does not rid the world. Herein voters and church largely the same. This is perhaps one reason why there were very few in Uri witch hunts. Although the Uri company is locked in a certain sense, it is to be no visible Zurfluh ordeal. The Uri society perceives what is elsewhere seen as problematic, as unproblematic. run in a closed system, all cultural Changes without too much difficulty. Can
so Zurfluh asks at the end of his book, Uri's model of the mountain regions of Switzerland to transfer? Without answering the question clearly is Zurfluh but rather to recognize that he replied in the affirmative. Whether the traditional world in Uri himself able to say that the future will tell. Certainly, there are two poles, the progress on the one hand and the duration of the other. These are the poles, but they are complementary and not mutually exclusive. What weight you want to attach these two poles, may decide that question every reader for himself. The book by Zurfluh can help him.

The Aschwanden and Bärchi

An excerpt from the Aschwanden family history

Bärchi THE - THE GATEWAY TO ISENTHAL

Thanks to improved living conditions in the first half of the 18th Century developed the strains Aschwanden quite strong. Lived in burrows, for example, the 10 families of generations IV, V and VI BALZ, spread over about 5 homes. Similar conditions were among the descendants of Andreas. Both strains seem to have come to prominence and prosperity. The Balz-tribe lived as a humble peasant class, the Andreas Family has produced more craftsmen. Below, we remain

Their residential area overlooking the lake of Uri is still unique. Not only the family of the ASCHWANDEN reached in this way to Isenthal, but others in the 17 Sisikon century building via the INFANGER and in the 18th / 19th Century from the Schächental the root of the Top Studio.

The typical example of a strongly growing family, the situation on the Reesti is in construction, the ancestral home of the big builders and Isenthalerlinien from BALZ. By 1740, lived under the same roof of the grandfather CHARLES ROMAN 1664 to 1749, with his second wife and the parents JOH. JOS. The accident is the fact thus described: "If a blaze originated on the Bärchi, allwo Franz Jos Aschwanden and wife Maria Urschel Gnoss by anruffen of St. Agatha was heard..."

residential buildings in Isenthal: The Bärchihaus

RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS IN ISENTHAL

GENERAL

While the stock of old residential buildings up to the first two thirds of the 18th century is low, have survived from the last third of a number of houses that their internal structure to deliver the best. Basic information about the old Isenthal housing has to be supported therefore anticipated in this group. Isenthal The house is in the best part of wood, in the first place caused by the local timber resources. Originally, only the basement just bricked base in stone, only the outer walls of the upper floors, built in the kitchen, one in wood. Since the later 18. Century, one has the brick wall section behind the fireplace, just in the width of the stove, as a narrow strip of wall in the kitchen floor. Even the chimneys were made of wood. Only exclusive use of wood was the Gadenbau. Until well into the 19th Century into one pf1egte also its base in wood to build and share only a low wall foundation. Because of the large wooden stock and the brick was used for residential roofing late and reluctantly.

at the residential buildings of the later 18th Cent fall on the impressive breadth and depth. There are usually Vorlauben added them, and often protrudes from the place of a one Kammerbau; usually arrange themselves so the spacious Room and parlor three front chambers at. Moreover, in the attic of a First Chamber usual. The side windowed fronts appear strong, especially in the posterior part of the building and the rear doors, however, are almost öffnungslos. She prefers them is added in all the facade width Holzschopf cultivation. The roof features - compared to the actual Tätschdachhäusern - a moderate slope (roof slope on average around 40 °). His strong gable board rests on strong, often ornamented beams Rosskopf consoles. In the Grundrißstruktur, a tendency for the transition building between the front and rear building, the most common variant, a short transition section to the entrance area, caused by the installation of a memory, the kitchen takes on again the depth of the rear building. For larger sized buildings, the kitchen is in the middle between memory and chamber. It does not open to the upper floor, is already provided with a blanket. The great depth of the building allows the attachment of the upper floor of two handsome chambers in the rear building (eaves side). Occasionally, modest notched ornaments.

Make striking is the great joy of color, in which the Isenthal their homes in the late 18th and in the early 19th Ausdekorierten century. Although the colored painting corresponded to the then prevailing taste, and also in neighboring communities of the sea areas like applied was the intensity of the relationship remains to color in Isenthal extraordinary. Main notes are the triads white-yellow-red or the green-red-white variant. The decoration of Foreign Affairs shall advance one frame to another. On the side fronts the window trim panel will only add even painted illusion. Even at home, in picturesque carved ceilings and doors, buffets and chests, this special affinity for the color is read. The green glazed tile stoves were in the 18 and in the early 19th Century, mostly obtained from the potters in Gersau.

Ways To Remember Dr.mrs. Vandertramp

Isenthal and Bärchi in the French occupation in 1799

General Suworoff on the Gotthard (Contemporary Presentation)

In his impressive witness account of the turbulent times from 1798 to 1803 in the canton of Uri, we can Karl Franz Lusser the terrible times to get close. Since it is clear from the position of the "old order" reports and polemics, I can easily imagine how even today's societies, where an order is imposed from the outside, never to rest and how the lives of the inhabitants of terror, fear, hunger , poverty, uncertainty and uncertainty is characterized. (Afghanistan seems to me a recent example again is significant in the sense)

is the beginning of the first chapter
(forerunners of the Revolution of 1789 to 1798)

"The seed, the after philosophers and God-forgotten religious scoffers spread so bold and so richly had walked in France more than ample to weed and always wore abundant fruit, so much so that it ghörte for good tone for the fine education, Christianity, and particularly to mock the Catholic religion and its institutions and practices and to make ridiculous, and the priests of the religion to despise and decry their duties as arrogance, as a disturbance of human happiness ........"

Twice Lussier describes episodes in which Isenthal was affected by the war. In the end it seemed to the French generals apparently more appropriate to agree to an "honorable capitulation," as unnecessary to waste resources on this side show. And so the Isenthal in memory of those days can feel einwenig as "heroes."
follow here are the two descriptions:

Chapter Nine
the Peasants' War Start: expulsion of the French from Uri (1799)
(pages 112 and 113)

".... most fell in the night or early in the morning the farmers in hands who are prisoners and the wounded brought to the monastery. Among the former was also Grenadier Captain Dupin, whom some wanted by the first successful issue has become great and wuthentbrannte Schreier, with other prisoners cut down immediately, but the earnest intercession of the Lord Chief Magistrate Jost Müller, joined several human-minded fellow, succeeded in the infamy of and prevent the nuns cared for these unfortunates with genuine Christian love. Several severely wounded French inspired because of their mind after they moved through the participation of the soul-zealous pastor Imhof, from whose hand still receive the holy sacraments - a boon to them in the revolutionized homes would be very difficulty to become part of.

Immediately after the battle of the bridge to Seedorf of the path of most knowledgeable man Bürglen, Franz Arnold, Emmet Francis was called, rushed into the Isenthal; of sweat dripping, he came in the middle of the night in Birki, the nearest to home this valley of throwing the still bloody sword on the table, told briefly what had happened and demanded that the hill would be filled quickly in the chapel Frutt to the French, who could look this way back, denying that. This was done in the utmost haste, and really hard the day dawned, it appeared a troop of French, with shots and stones they were in this dangerous bottleneck and receive the most part captured. Two of them tried to escape through rocky hillsides, where few natives would have dared to climb, so great was her dread of the embittered farmers, but only one managed to reach the Isleten, the other fell to death. A captured officer then went on that same morning, farmers accompanied the whole forest down, causing the hidden and now here, now there was one out of the thicket, but some, either because they are not the calling voice heard or unrecognized, or expected no quarter came, until the third or fourth, even a sergeant until the fifth day, driven by hunger, pale and distorted from the hiding places. Some of these stragglers were already the first evening at the white house near he collected Reuss bridge to Attinghausen again, they were the next morning early attacked by some farmers, thrown and made in Ruberst prisoners, and they could only with difficulty by the human-minded people from savage slaughter be saved. They were led away to the other ankh Seedorf, from where it all together the following day were taken to Bürglen and imprisoned in the old tower near the Tellscapelle ....."

CHAPTER
Uri's reconquest by the French (1799)
(page 131)

"...... Had now accepted the men of their quiet little valley Isenthal manfully and several attacks which Vaud against the construction of Bärki undertook rejected bloody. Finally Imholz minister was negotiating on behalf of the brave valley stock and received a very honorable capitulation, according to which they were allowed to keep their arms .........."

Walter Hauser: The poet as a chaplain in Isenthal 1928

Walter Hauser, sensitive and quiet sealed Uri pastor, was in our family a "saint", a personality of immense moral and cultural authority. My Grandmother, one of his great admirers, gave me each Christmas, the most recent tape of Walter Hauser. I have a special relationship to the first volume "steps to the light," which is almost exclusively formed in the years 1928/29 in Isenthal. In the excerpt below, I quote from two poems and an excerpt from Hauser's autobiography in which he describes the time as a chaplain in Isenthal. From Bärchi, we can look directly to Sisikon, the Hauptwirkungsort the later "poet priest of Sisikon.

first Mass
O morning!
Are you the sky,
that you are so full of light?
A sea of lilies,
that you're so full of scent?
A death,
that you're so full of tears?

I put on the shawl
the force
the alb blooming purity
the belt victorious breeding, the centurion
helping love
the stole free obedience,
the robe of joy,
of joy!

O morning!
Are you the sky,
that you are so full of light,
're full of joy,
're full of God?

"Four weeks after the first Mass I was invited by Mrs. Egger of moss to her hotel on the Frutt, Obwalden. There, I read on a little bench outside a few women for the first time in my life in my poems before. The ladies were polite and patient.

A seminar year after his ordination, the fourth year of study after high school, completed my degree course. Where next? Courteous manner in my rain Gisler, who had meanwhile received the episcopal dignity, which I preferred said, teaching at a secondary school, further studies, a few years in Zurich vicar, or pastoral care in a quiet, inner Swiss village. I chose without hesitation the last. I would not decide differently today.

few weeks later I was appointed to the Regentie: "Would you like to go as a parish assistant and secondary teachers to Isenthal?" - "Isenthal? Where is the "-" This is a high-altitude, still Mountain village at the Lake of Uri. That would do for your health. "

On 15 August 1928 for the first time I stood in the pulpit of Isenthal, and in October I took on the newly formed secondary school. The people and the pastor had patience with the young, apparently somewhat impractical Kaplan, and I was tormented me honest and hard with the school. I was not foreshadowed in the discipline. The students were determined to be short, but I think the one or the other at least learned to write a correct German sentence. I stayed at the rectory, and both the parish priest as the housekeeper tried their best to offer me a home. Only the little black dog was on my piano, the only one in the valley, not get used right. I sometimes suffered much from the silence of the valley, but I even had the altar, the piano and the desk. Very close to the village flourished entire forests of Spiräen and occasional rhododendron. In Isenthal I wrote most of the poems of the "steps to the light." I'm not in publishing them.
A poem from that time might tell you how hard it occurred to me sometimes, the loneliness of being ready. "

twilight
I sit in the evening.
The loneliness purple falls over my knee, about my growing
foot,
flows over highways of longing.

shy bird sings my soul on my shoulder
songs of sweet sadness
expensive and my temple.

Because after a Kosung hungry man.

But my mother is away
and does not hear me.
And my friend drowned
in the dark sea in the world.

So the shy bird
own soul sits on my shoulder and expensive
my temple.

"It struck me then but sad at heart, when I left after two years of the schoolroom in Isenthal to draw as vicar of the affected pastors and bishops Commissioner to Altdorf. When I pulled the rectory bell in Altdorf, I got by the window notice that the Commissioner had just died, and now you have no use for me. I was then admitted it, and I was a month in the soul. care to help out the Canton main town. -

Meanwhile went to a Törein. The adjacent parish Bürglen was looking for a chaplain. I could imagine myself in the wonderful romantic Bürglen parsonage, and make a recommendation seems optimistic, those of the auxiliary bishop Bürglen Gisler removed the concerns that a non-Uri Kaplan to participate in the village. I was elected, and on 4 October 1930, I was 28 Birthday, I moved. The item was completely cut me to the body. There was an extensive farming community with a stylish, albeit in need of renovation Baroque church, with twelve chapels, a warm, approachable people and to me the very ideal pastor. He was a mentally and physically very moving Seventy full of spirit, warmth and humor, and touching simplicity and with quite amazing art skills. His house was a museum full of art history and folklore Entertaining similarities. Among these works were of great value which had been preserved by Father Julius Loretz from destruction. Every evening sitting ministers and chaplains in the parish house or a small bench at the field gate together, and the priest took for their own, sometimes elaborate rituals a real touch of his snuff-brown, and it was without Jass never boring. Of course, literary inclinations possessed priest Loretz not, though he wrote an unusually entertaining style. Meanwhile
was occasionally one of my verses come into foreign hands, and they urged me to give a ribbon to the public. So I put together what seemed appropriate and was looking for a publisher. No one wanted to risk it. Finally, the German teacher took pity on Stan's College, Dr. P. Leutfrid Signer, wrote a detailed discussion of the poems and persuaded the publisher Raeber, Lnzern to risk the publication. Director job at the Studio in Zurich, welcomed the ligament with high praise, Peter Dörfler wrote a short, excellent discussion, which looks today like a prophecy, and P. 1 Signer reported to the ligament with a detailed article in the "Swiss Rundschau. The door was pushed open. For my immediate environment offered the opportunity to invite me to all kinds of work: chants for national celebrations, poems for weddings, anniversaries and first Mass, sayings for mourning keepsake. Many of them I wrote in a poor Uri dialect, but I knew that they were then recited it correctly. My pastor saw the early-flowering laurel of his chaplain without envy, though probably with all sorts of legitimate concerns. He said hardly a word about it. "

The Bärchistrasse

The Bärchistrasse was the first building project, which was carried out under the civil commons community or by the Allmendbürgerrat. The road from Seedorf Isleten: Passion 2

THE ROAD Seedorf - Isleten

(from reminiscences of the Isenthal at the opening of the road goods Seedorf - Isleten, by Max Oechslin, book printing Gamma, Altdorf 1951)

The newly created G ü, ters the route with Seedorf Isleten links - and will continue over the next two years to build - has now Isenthal taken out of its seclusion. Already five decades ago, when we went to the construction of the Isentalerstraße, we thought of a "connection over land" by was provided from the lowest return of the road directly through the Gand against Engisort and along the shore in the street line of today's road freight to find the connection to Seedorf. But one part was fear, even then before the rock fall in Gand, which is now met through the creation of the hundred-meter-long gallery, and on the other hand, at that time was of the steamboat traffic on the lake in full bloom, so that the Isental and cantonal authorities said that the road link to Isleten give the best information. As a result, was then becoming clear that with this "blind road" could not manage, especially needed during the first world war of 1914-1918 and on the lake traffic restrictions were that the Isental again increased left "into the remote valley back. Around 1923 by Ing Fahrner, Lucerne, a first general project for a road link Seedorf-Islet-building was erected at what we had to write a "forest assessment" as the road also the digestion of forests along the lake, the Isental and building serves.

It seemed on this project, not a good exercise to Stern, because it disappeared in a drawer or box, it is even "out of the country." 1930, were above all the community representatives Isenthal, to which is also to build, as well as interested in Seedorf, the idea of a freight road construction on again, with the former building director Charles Gerig Wassen well kept occurring to any restraint, because of the other side from a major thoroughfare, the "left bank" was spoken, which bring the disintegration of the whole left bank and connect directly with Uri Nidwalden to country would. However, it should probably be noted that even with the construction of a large car-road having just on the track Engisort-building three tunnels of several hundreds of meters, for internal transport, especially the agriculture and forestry, along the shore extending and tunnel-free Güterstaße is directly necessary . Also, the pedestrian is much rather walk on a road outside than long tunnel, even if the latter are exposed to artificial.

In 1937, on the part of Kant's Cultural Affairs Bureau under the influx of Ing H. Bickel, Zurich, worked out a freight road project, which conforms closely to the shoreline, a length of 6866 m (6182 m new road and 648 m existing , and allowed to correct road section) and a roadway width of 2 m, total width including banquet and channels 2,6 m. On the part of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, the project was approved with a contribution of 37.5 percent, below the 25th May 1938, and under an additional contribution of 12.5 percent Arbeitsbeschafftmg 22 February 1939.

The cantonal referendum had approved in connection with the approval of the loan for the construction of the road Susten the estimate of 690'000 francs, and the necessary credit for the implementation of the work. As a result, but appeared again on the construction of the large left-bank road, what pages Track of the Federal Inspectorate, Bern, a project was drawn up for the track on the Uri area of Engineering Bureau is Carl Erni, Lucerne, included. At the same again appeared on the construction of a road freight, which is why the Uri cantonal building office by Ing Bertrand Müller, Altdorf, had set up a new project to this effect, on 13 September 1940 was present and calculated a cost estimate of 1.275 million Swiss francs.

The fact that a car left bank road (with a width of 6 m) and a road freight to the same call came and the federal authorities were against an imminent construction of a major thoroughfare as safe also the fact that the canton of Uri that has been paid through road INCAPABLE hardly bear to let the track Inspectorate on the basis of plans for a left bank highway engineer by Dr. Ing. Ruckli, Bern, a freight route for the road project construction charge-Seedorf, while maintaining three tunnels, with lengths of 344, 703 and 316 meters. The cost estimate put on 1.789 million Swiss francs. After the building deadlines extended for the project from 1937/1938, but was passed unused, construction, and providing subsidies of road freight on the part of the covenant with order of 2 May 1942 postponed indefinitely, with the determination that a new Input to be made in accordance with the then resulting conditions and construction prices have.

It is understandable that the particularly interested communities Isenthal and construction at the cantonal authorities repeatedly requested the construction of the goods by road, as it had been approved in the referendum of 1938. More and less, allowed the financial situation of the canton, take a large left bank highway launched, at a cost of the route Flüeler street-Seelisberg Buochs were still charged with 39.5 million Swiss francs, while on the road section Seedorf-Islet-building alone 12 620 000 francs omitted. Why was the idea of the construction of road freight increased again Ground. The Executive Council instructed the cantonal Cultural Affairs to draw up a new project, with the lines of the left bank highway had to be respected. People thought this, remember, are that in a later expansion of goods by road in a through street work as a kind of preparatory work and can be integrated into the main road.

The idea of a new project has been developed, which is largely considered the line of a highway south bank, on the other hand, completely bypassing the long tunnel. The project was considered by Dr. Ing Ruckli basis, especially for the construction of the gallery and the bridges. The roadway was at 3 m set, plus banquets or longitudinal peel of each 30 cm wide, 3.6 m total Tunnels and bridges were given a width of 4 m (3.4 m carriageway). In any avalanche and torrent programs was primarily seen cobbled ford. - This road freight, which it follows that in an open area of the hawser of the left bank highway, in the rocky areas, however the shoreline to consistently to that route, "a day" are replaced, the project has a length of 6321 meters and expects a cost estimate van 2 500 000 Swiss francs.

This project was submitted by the Cantonal the Forestry Office, Department for Cultural Affairs, in early April 1948 the authorities. The district administration said the project at its meeting of 26 April 1948 well and requested the adoption of the same referendum, the issue of the implementation of the buildings necessary loan of 2.5 million Swiss francs, and the recovery plan. Uri people voted on 23 May 1948 with only 376 against 3997 Yes No to the request, so that already on 26 could decide in May 1948 the Government forwarded the project to the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, to the already Erhältlichmachung the project from the 1937/1938 promised contribution. Bottom 6th June 1948 carried out this decision. After a thorough review of the project by the Federal Meliorationsamt, with even Chief Engineer Alfred Strüby participated blessed benevolent, was the presentation by order of the Federal Council under the 30th December 1948 approved has been set although the subsidy-eligible amount to 2 million, with a contribution of 37.5 percent and a maximum of 750 000 francs.

Such was the situation open for construction.

The first lot could be announced as early as April 1949 for the route to Acherli Seehof, 1553 meters. The forgiveness was made to the company Viktor Gasperini, Altdorf, on 6 June 1949 started work and was able to complete this end of November. Costs remained within the draft budget of 293 000 francs.

The second contract section was the company Emil Baumann, Altdorf, Los IIA, and Joseph Bowman, Altdorf, lot 11B passed, construction of which began in March 1950, so that the end October, the work was finished. Here, too, could be remains of 400,000 francs for the route to Acherli Engisort with 1,229 meters inside the quotation.

It could also delay the detail of the project III. Contract section will be drawn up for the track Engisort Isleten, ie 907 m, with the estimated budget of 470,000 francs, with the construction of the rockfall Gallery by Gand at 102 meters and the rock part caused by shield specific costs. The work was the company Emil Baumann, Altdorf, Los IIIA (including gallery building company with Josef Baumann Muheim, Altdorf), and Viktor Gasperini, Altdorf, Los IIIB, forgiven. With the works in November Started in 1950, so that they were terminated in late April 1951 and the continuous traffic Seedorf-Isleten Isenthal now and into the open.

The total cost of the route by Seedorf (Seehof) and Islet (mountain stream) that were for 4087 m, calculated on the overall project to 1.427 million francs, according to the detailed projects, with a few savings, with 1.163 million Fri The costs will rise to around 1.165 million Swiss francs.
This is the valley of the large commercial Isental been connected. The spring of 1951 mean for this particular turn of mountain people. May it be for the good of the valley, the good, open the door, but all that is foreign, and henceforth no input . Grant

The road to Isenthal: Passion of a

Bärchi As residents and enthusiasts interested me the story of this place and the whole Isenthal. By building on the Bärchi an important but very difficult path leading into Isenthal. The other access from the Isleten anspruchsvoll. So was no less because it is not surprising that since the 19th century was always planned a trip to the race of Isenthal lake and fought for it. One can speak of a true tale of woe. Michael Walker, former town clerk of Isenthal, tried in 1991, this tale of woe with documents from the community meetings and work up to the council and described. Me personally touch these documents the struggle of a remote community over access to the world and I want to make it so accessible on this blog and other interested parties. Read with profit the following chapter from Michael Walker's book:

The inspiration for designing a ravine road is to be expected from the wood. They envisioned a road to the left before the Isleten directly. According to lore, the bottom lines was planned by Schwybogen along the stream through Ringli Gumplig-Compassionate (present location of the ARA), then through the wood cut under the present road through the direction of ravine forest to the dimmer hole, below the present water trough, and from there directly to the old bridge at the Isleten.
The top version was designed by Birchistutz Vorderbirchi below in return for the dimmer hole and from then on as variant 1 The project selection was an important decision and was therefore carried out by secret ballot, which at that time was an exception.

After rejection of the project paved road gorge herself slowly, other considerations, since the existing road conditions were always unsatisfactory. First, they wanted to leave the planning of a new road running through the District. At the cantonal level, the needs of Isenthal not classified as urgent. illustrate the following protocols:

President Joseph Gisler said that the planning of a new road had been omitted so far.

to a respective request of the municipal council on introduction of a new road project from the construction office, get what order it from the Government in 1893 and has been completed by not date, so it was decided that the Governing Council a complaint against the Planning Bureau of appeal from the village community.

the 26th letter September 1894 founded the District of Engineering Müller Delay: The Journal Isenthal was only on 6 September by the country's topography in Bem available, and all existing measurement instruments were used in the construction of the Klaus Street. According to records was now an estimate of 217 000 Fri placed for a new variant Isleten - Schiltegg - Fruttkäppeli, the partial rebuilding Fruttkäppeli - Birchi and an expansion of the existing road Birchi - Village with Gefällausgleich. As a further option for the 1870 Gorge Road planned cost calculation was made of 110,000 francs.
These proposals did not meet the expectations of Isenthal. They seized the initiative and contributed to the road project the engineering firm in Chur Wildberger.

The engineering Wildberger, Chur, created Isleten road project - was Isenthal without exception with the following counter-motion accepted
permit if it is, whether the crop stream, the road through an open turn create.

Wildberger The project was well received in Isenthal, with the exception of the rocks at the foot of Hohenfluh Kehr. Was the projected lines from the restaurant later Isleten for the first return, then against the Hohenfluh and above the crop stream as a rock against the reverse direction top loop Käppeli-Egg. Today's average return would be failed. Against the reciprocal of the rock itself resisted the wood, because they feared there a too small radius for timber transport, especially in winter when he was done with slide. To understand this winter transport of wood, you have to have the carts have experienced with sleds!

After standing traditions and a different variant in conversation, which is not included in the minutes. you would have the rock immediately after return from Seedorf and not out on the Isleten, because even at that time has taken place through the construction of the Gotthard railway, a market upturn towards Altdorf. This would become a longer route to the main road and to expect such a large participation of the canton in which the construction and maintenance have been. In the background, perhaps even the sawmill Bolzbach (at today's power plant) would be interested, its owners, called Infante, a former Isenthal was. However, due to the old Isleten Custom and law was a trade center, the road was finally built with three insert Isleten direction. Was projected behind the road to the village Isenthal or until the so-roaring rock 'behind the sawmill.

village communities 9th February and 17 May 1896

The cost distribution and presentation on the new road Isleten - Isenthal what is discussed in several conferences members of high government and of Korporationsrat and council of here so they are estimated to cost around the plant to 160 000 francs, of which the corporation Uri 50%, 30% of the canton and the municipality has to take 20% was adopted, including the obligations contained in the template.
The road commission, consisting of: Councilman Joseph Gisler, Alois Korporationsrat Snape and Mayor John Infanger has been confirmed until after the completion of road construction.

The project Wildberger then formed the basis for the request of the Government Council and the district administrator of the rural community of 3 May 1896 , construction and maintenance of the Isenthalerstrasse on which a brief summary was:

first The District takes over the construction of the Isenthalerstrasse. Construction began in 1899, after completion of Klaus Street.
second The site management authority has the right to adjust the plans changed conditions on upholding the purpose of Street, particularly in relation to long timber transport.
third The District shall contribute 30%, which is 50 000 francs.
4th The Construction of the Canton Road leads the bill. The partners agree to make ongoing payments.
5th The community has Isenthal perform the expropriations. The costs are borne by the building accounts and should be at the maximum of 10,000 francs.
6th The Corporation is committed to the commons floor, sand and stones cast free.
7th The District will ensure the maintenance of crop Bach to the church Isenthal.

from around the Baubotschaft here only the section II is quoted as showing the conditions at that time, many of which some still exist:

"In regard to the creation of this proposal we advocate, above all, as meaning that the road Isenthal - to satisfy Isleten a well-founded need able and for the community Isenthal is a vital question, so to speak Isenthal counts. 598 inhabitants and is part of its population by only the central municipalities of the canton, but its territorial scope to one of the largest and on the utilization of land, one of the most important towns of Uri, but the value of the Alps, forests and property to several million estimated. The isolation of the valley, the very small fasteners to Away and the remoteness from the traffic be a barrier to the development of agriculture and alpine economy and affect in the Valley operated timber trade are increasingly active and sensible. The products of agriculture do not have the value they deserve, while the imported food comes to be much higher than other places. In these unfortunate circumstances, it may surprise no one if the economic status of the population is in decline, dwindling to the desire and love for the management of land and begin the migration assumes dimensions that must be described as unhealthy. Can a road that mismatches not thoroughly remedy, it is the same but considerably mild afford the activity, the agility and the Schaffensfreudigkeit the population effectively and help ensure the products of the valley, a larger and more profitable sales. For this, the new road the Isental also the tourism will be better and probably open up extensively by its altitude, its pure and balmy air, its scenic beauty and its alpine mountains, and the world-famous Urirotstock perfectly entitled to that expectation. Finally may still be pointed out that Isenthal is the only municipality in the country, which is not due to a large infrastructure. "

about the construction in the municipality Very few records exist because the construction management was the cantonal building authority. The construction contract was awarded to the joint venture of Bowman Bros., and Toneatti Stiefenhofer. As foreman of the engineering drawing Wildberger H. Steinegger. Construction work coincided with the turn of the century and was 1899/1900.

Compared to the project were still requires additions: Another radius in the corners, a new timber yard in Käppeli-Egg and amendment of the barriers. It was originally planned to hold round wooden slats by thick wooden posts. In the end, instead of wooden slats, an iron railing was installed, and instead of the walled wooden posts were set granite stones.
The greatest difficulty was the building committee with the Nobel AG, the owner of the site of Sprengstoffabrik, the one the jetty was the steamship Lake Lucerne. In the construction of the road, the company has sought to keep out all loads such as rights of way, Sust and pier from their area, allegedly for security reasons. why the Project was the beginning of the road at the magazine (where the restaurant later Isleten) before and moved Sust and pier there too. As test runs have shown, however, was the steamship company creating the new landing site can not guarantee when foehn storm. Isenthal had to drop this option and asked for continued Sust and pier at the old location. After long negotiations came today's compromise solution:
jetty off the factory half-way compared to the first variant. In return, the Sprengstoffabrik had in the construction and maintenance of the extended road and participate in the Bachkorrektion.

Lord Chief Magistrate and Chief Financial Officer Gustav Muheim wrote on 7 June 1902 to the President of the Construction Committee of Isenthal:
"I am glad that the story is finally adjusted in my life have much in acting, but never so annoying and uncomfortable Did the way yesterday in the Board of Directors of SLA clearly stated my opinion.. .
These words speak louder than long quotes from the Negotiations.

On 5 October 1901 there was a tour of the construction befmdlichen road through the agencies involved. The construction management was the very much for the work performed and commissioned the construction company with additional work, so including the creation of a reciprocal space at the 'roaring rock'.
Since the Isenthal for the state of the construction costs interested, asked the council on 4 December 1902 by the Construction Authority Uri a partial settlement. On 31 December 1903 was then submitted to the Government a statement of up to 31 December 1902 accrued expenses submitted: Fri

were After a long planning phase and a construction period of about two years, the building history and the struggle of Isenthal good for a closed road to be traveled as a connection to the valley and over the lake. The forces of nature but could there be no peace, it rumbled in the mountains against the intervention and called for continued fighting.

struggle against the forces of nature

According Council Minutes of 11 November 1905 was buried the new road between the lower and middle return on all three loops by a landslide of about 150 m 3 altogether. It was requested a meeting with the District Engineer. As a representative of the community were determined: Councilman Joseph Gisler and orphans Vogt Joseph Walker.

The dawn place was whether the road and ran from the 'Heidenkehli' sweeping up to the middle at that little hut at the cherry factory. Thus, the in-cracked rock layers between the lower were pushed off road parts and damaged the road in all three loops and covered with rubble and rock. The negotiations were "resinous." The District of expertise required to remove one of the causes of earth and rock slide and their rehabilitation. On 8 December 1906 called for the evacuation of the city council and approval of the road until spring of 1907. The Executive Council decided on 19 make January 1907, the evacuation only after the existence of expertise. This was then on 12 March 1907 delivered by the Federal Inspectorate track and came to the following conclusion:
The landslide took place above the first and second turn and spilled all three road loops. On the steep angle towards the lake expiring, interspersed with clay layers intermediate ledges at Wasserzudrang dangerous sliding surfaces are formed. It is recommended that the cracks with rock walls and fuses and secured with ties. By order dated 23rd

March 1907 was the Government willing to give this work the contractor Toneatti and pay the cost of an extra current account. A cost-sharing was reserved and the corporation Uri invited to participate. On 25 March 1908 requested the council Isenthal the corporation again a cost-sharing. On 2 June 1908 rejected this but a fee from decided. With respect to the road maintenance was based on the rural community of the Government decision of 3 May 1896, from Bach to bolster return if the church is the maintenance obligation of Canton, after changing the trackbed this applies from the top to flip up. On 4 April 1909 a discussion was held with the Planning Bureau Uri instead of regarding the maintenance of the lsenthalerstrasse and costs at the rock and the landslide of 1905. The outcome of this debate are missing information. Some information about us is a letter from the savings fund to the Uri SELF lsenthal, which is:
According to decision of the Government Council of 7 March 1914 will be charged on new Contocorrent No. 393 community Isenthal - clearance work at the Isenthalerstrasse - with Friday 9 638.85 val. 31. December 1913.
The road maintenance of the trail from the restaurant Isleten to the middle between the first and second return from church, and against the Isenthal Grosstal was now by the municipality Isenthal, while the intermediate line was maintained by the Building Authority Uri. After the construction of the road freight Isleten - Seedorf was Kantonsweg Engisort - Isenthalerstrasse lifted and the District assumed the entire lower leg in the Isenthalerstrasse. This fits the saying: 'State mills grind slowly but they grind safe •

We have this section reports in detail, because it now seems incredible that the evacuation and opening of a community access road was only after three years.. For transport during the traffic interruption from 1905 It only is, that the items out for the most part with barges and boats to Engisort were. Then they were on the old Kantonsweg carried up to Isenthalerstrasse and from there by horse-drawn wagons transported to Isental.

At 31 March 1963, at 18:30 clock, occurred at Käppeli-Egg in the so-called 'Balm' re a rock fall and destroyed the Isenthalerstrasse in all four road loops. By this natural disaster was a blow to the town restored to grandfather's time and was again on the old footpath through the bends need to Isleten. Such traffic interruption met economically, the whole population, particularly the trade.
On 1 April 1963 was a first inspection with Building Management and County Engineer. On 2 April was A joint meeting of the Community Council and the City Council, instead of commons. The following urgent request has been set up at the Construction Authority Uri:

- instant clearance work of demolition share and create temporary bridges on snatched away street plays,
- Transfer of the high-voltage power line through the EWA for security during the clearance work,
- keeping extra courses through the SGV times the needs of workers and residents are adjusted.

The cable plant from the timber yard to timber yard Käppeli Isleten was created immediately by the community Isenthal and served primarily for persons and goods and to supply the valley with goods for daily living requirements. It was also the Abräumungsfirma Gebr Amold Ltd., Bürglen, made for transport of materials available.

an insight into the mood of the population are the following passage from the Council Minutes of 22 April 1963:

President Infante Henry gives an overview of the work undertaken since the last session work as well as interventions at various instances and adds: "It must be noted, unfortunately, that there are citizens that can be carried away to intemperate expressions. If the pace of work is not all want it, then the results from the natural conditions on this job. If we seek to continue to facilitate through a quiet, dedicated work of the imposed Go!

The concept of the construction office Uri was, simultaneously with the orderly and safe clearance work better development to make the road. That is why this had to completely during the rock removal for transport and during the roll may be frozen.
contrast, required a petition in the town of opening the road and opened to traffic since 20 June 1963, with resumption of work after l. November. could the council not to side with the founders. In a interruption of the work would have passed the danger of 'eternal' site. The general was an ongoing rehabilitation and the earliest possible level traffic conditions better served than if something quickly patched up everywhere and nowhere finished, solid work had been done.
Postal rates have been on 30 September 1963 officially resumed. In order for the traffic problems were eliminated after six months duration, and calmed down again slowly. This natural disaster has once again shown how the population of a mountain valley to the ravages of nature is exposed, suffered economic and social disadvantages and has to live with them.
